Scottsdale by the numbers

  • In Maricopa County (which includes Scottsdale), fentanyl continues to drive the crisis: >3 deaths/day on average, ~60% of drug-related deaths involve fentanyl, and fentanyl deaths are up ~4,900% since 2015.

  • 8,777 suspected overdose responses countywide in 2024 (EMS/Law Enforcement)—about 4.3% lower than 2023.

  • ~11 Arizonans/day experienced a non-fatal opioid overdose in 2023; ~75% involved fentanyl.

  • ~5 Arizonans/day died from opioids in 2023.

  • Alcohol harm shows fluctuation: Maricopa logged 861 fully alcohol-attributable deaths in 2021, 731 in 2022, and 741 in 2023 (chronic + acute causes only).

  • Statewide treatment gap (2022–2023): about 19.8% of Arizonans 12+ met criteria for a SUD, 10.6% for Alcohol Use Disorder, 2.25% for Opioid Use Disorder—and ~74% of those needing SUD treatment didn’t receive it.

  • Neonatal impact: Scottsdale’s Primary Care Area (PCA) recorded a Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome rate of ~8.2 per 1,000 birth hospitalizations (2017–2021)—close to the statewide average but still a concern.

Youth trends (Maricopa County, 2024 Arizona Youth Survey)

  • 30-day alcohol, marijuana, and e-cigarette use decreased vs. 2022 across grades 8, 10, and 12.

  • Lifetime alcohol use ~27% among students; 30-day fentanyl use 0.3% (first year asked).

  • ~80% of students who’ve heard of fentanyl view it as “great risk.”
